Overview

Back in May, at this year’s JxJ Festival, Daryl Davis and Seth Kibel celebrated the music of Chess Records, the seminal early blues and rock and roll record label founded by the Jewish brothers Leonard and Phil Chess.  For this program, they’re going to celebrate the music produced by a number of other highly influential record labels run by Jewish record producers.  For example, Modern Records, the LA-based label founded and run by the Jewish Bihari brothers, which launched the careers of Etta James, Ike & Tina Turner, among others.  Art Rupe’s Specialty Records, which gave the world Little Richard, Lloyd Price, Percy Mayfield, and more.  And, of course, Atlantic Records, founded by Ahmet Ertugun (Turkish) and Herb Abramson (Jewish), and featuring the legendary production talents of Jerry Wexler, who helmed hits by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, and more.

Daryl, Seth, and their guest musicians will both perform some of this timeless music as well as tell some of the fascinating stories behind the songs and how Jewish and Black Americans worked together to create some of the greatest music this world has ever seen.

You can bring the little ones to dance with the band – Children under 7 years old attend free of charge.

Starting at 10:30 AM, coffee and bagels from Baked By Yael will be available on site for purchase.
