Overview

Joe Lieberman, the first Jewish person to be a Vice Presidential candidate on a major party ticket in the US, is celebrated for putting principles above party. This timely feature doc chronicles Lieberman’s extraordinary journey, his 40+ years of public service and the depth of his commitment to the American people. His message of moderation and bipartisanship resonates even more powerfully now underscoring the importance of unity and collaboration in politics. Joe gave filmmakers access to his life and work as he hoped his story will inspire civic responsibility, elevate political discourse, and stimulate meaningful dialogue during this pivotal election year and beyond. With exclusive access to never-before-seen home movies and images of Joe’s early years as well as during his Senate career in the U.S. and overseas. Filmed 7+ hours of exclusive interviews with Senator Lieberman before his untimely passing in March 2024. With Senator Susan Collins, Senator Lindsey Graham, Senator Chris Dodd, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Dr. Ben Chavis, Ambassador Cindy McCain, Ambassador Tom Nides.

Among Senator Lieberman’s accomplishments:

HOMELAND SECURITY – In the aftermath of September 11, Senator Lieberman played a pivotal role in safeguarding the nation by spearheading the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, uniting multiple agencies under a single department to enhance domestic security. His leadership also led to the establishment of the 9/11 Commission and the passage of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, which reorganized the intelligence community to better prevent future attacks.

CYBERSECURITY – Senator Lieberman played a crucial role in advancing cybersecurity reform by advocating for a robust public-private partnership to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure. Through his leadership, he helped shape legislation that aimed to enhance cybersecurity standards, promote information sharing, and protect civil liberties, laying the groundwork for stronger defenses against potential cyber threats.

DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL

Senator Lieberman was the lead sponsor of the bill to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ service members to serve openly in the military, thereby promoting equality and strengthening the integrity of the armed forces. He introduced the legislation in the Senate, which ultimately led to the repeal of the policy in December 2010.

OPPOSING VIOLENCE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY – Lieberman played a key role in challenging the entertainment industry to adopt higher standards and protect children from exposure to violent and inappropriate content. Through his advocacy, he helped implement tools like the V-chip, improved media ratings, and promoted industry self-regulation, ensuring parents had better control over their children’s media consumption while respecting First Amendment rights.
